Wockenfuss Candies is proud to be one of the oldest candy makers in Baltimore. The year 2015 is a special one for us, as we will be celebrating our 100th Birthday. We are a family owned business that is now in its fifth generation of candy-making.

It all started for us when Herman Charles Wockenfuss was born in 1875 in West Prussia, Germany. He came to America in 1887 and eventually learned how to make candy. In 1915, he proudly opened the Wockenfuss Candy Company, known today as Wockenfuss Candies.

Herman Charles continued to operate the business until his son, Herman Lee, and his wife, Marian, took it over in 1945 when Herman Lee returned from World War II. Under Herman Lee’s direction, the business continued to evolve and added three more stores to its flagship location on Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore. Herman Lee was instrumental in creating the signature homemade chocolate candies that are now so closely associated with Wockenfuss Candies’ reputation.

Though Herman Lee and his wife Marian are still involved in the business, their son Paul is now the owner and president of Wockenfuss Candies. Under Paul’s direction, the business is continuing to evolve. Presently, there are 8 retail stores in Maryland, including 3 in Ocean City, MD and also an internet business that continues to grow.

As we continue to grow and near our 100th Birthday, the family is still very involved in every aspect of the business. Presently, 4 generations of the Wockenfuss family are involved in the business. This includes 12 family members who are eagerly looking forward to the next 100 years.

**"Sweet Spot for Snacks and Souvenirs!"**

This place has everything you need for a quick sugar fix, but let’s talk about those dark chocolate almond bars—they’re dangerously good. The Carmellow ? It’s got this unique flavor that makes me 100% certain someone with the munchies invented it. But hey, I’m not complaining!

The shop’s tight, cozy, and packed with cute merch and souvenirs, so there’s more to browse while you snack. Small selection of candy, but they’ve got all the essentials to satisfy any sweet tooth. Definitely worth a stop if you need a little treat!

Great bark chocolate, even the dark was great, and the truffles were a hit at the thanksgiving dessert table!

Updated review as of May 17, 2024: They look fine but again they are HARD I get caramel both milk and dark chocolate (dark is definitely harder it broke off in a shard when I bit into it). I’m not sure what’s going on with this location but this time and the last time (that review is under this update) they’ve been HARD. I risk popping a crown off or filling out eating them. Maybe I should microwave them to soften them a bit idk. And for $26 dollars a pound I will not be going back. According to my mother her dark chocolate covered raspberry ones (Jelly and Cream) are good. We paid $57.58 with taxes because we both got a pound. We got them today and they are room temperature. (Pictures in order are my box, 2 views of the one that broke off a shard when I bit, my mother’s box, and section of the receipt telling time, date, and amounts/total)
Even their other location in OC I wouldn’t trust solely based off this one though it probably does more business since it’s on the boardwalk so maybe there is fresher?

Original review from 3 years ago: Service was great but the dark chocolate covered caramel chocolates I loved from getting in a mall in Baltimore we’re hard here. They weren’t the most squishy at the other place but here the caramel was nearly rock hard. And I love them but eating them still I have to be careful since eating carelessly before tore my gum when I bit into them. Idk if the caramel was over cooked or old or what but it’s barely able to pass as a soft caramel candy. I don’t know what happened with the caramel at this place but so far every chocolate I got is like this. They’re delicious but disappointing because how hard the caramel is.
